I find it super challenging to put my style into words. It includes so many aspects of your experience: booking, planning, shooting, editing, etc. How do I say tell me all your wedding plans because I’m a sucker for details at the same time telling you that I’ll take care of the family lists and help you with your timeline while trying to describe what your photos will look like when really it’s all about the feeling? I’m not sure, but I’m going to try.
BEFORE THE WEDDING
The two main parts of our relationship before the big day are engagement sessions and planning. First: Couples photos are my favourite! They give us a chance to get to know each other’s style, sense of humour, we improve our communication and we hone in on the perfect direction for your wedding day photos. Be prepared for cheesy jokes, very relaxed direction, a couple posed shots and a lot of cuddles. I want these photos to be as genuinely you as they can be so let your personality shine!
Planning is the second – but just as important – part of the deal. I’ll help as much or as little as you like. When you know the details, I’ll get your ceremony time and dinner time from you and plan your time frame around those two events. No two weddings are alike so examples are near impossible to give. Let me just say that whatever time frame you choose I’ll do my best to make it work for you. I’ll also make all your family groupings for formal photos for you if you like. I’m pretty awesome at it. And it’s one less thing for you to do.
THE WEDDING DAY
For most of the wedding day we are completely hands-off. No direction, no posing, no preferences. Although I’m an avid planner, my wedding day style is very go-with-the-flow. Letting the day unfold naturally and having you enjoy it is the most important job you have. Being a witness to it and taking photos to help you remember it is mine.
Getting Ready is a mostly candid experience for everyone. If you have important details I’ll ask you to set them out for me, and I may suggest a spot to get ready if you haven’t picked one. Your detail photos will be quick and simple so we aren’t away from the action. Those moments with your girls and guys are the real memories from the morning and we don’t want to miss them.
Your ceremony is completely and totally direction free. At no point should you even notice us. When I got married all I could see was my future husband smiling at me. I didn’t wonder where the photographer was. Neither should you.
For family photos we’ll take the reins. These photos last anywhere between ten and thirty minutes depending on whether or not we have to go looking for someone. And just because they’re family photos doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun with them. Cuddle, giggle, make a silly face. Why not?
Wedding party photos are nice and easy. Each of you will get photos with your party as well as all of you as a group too. We take a few quick photos, do something fun or silly, and let them go party.
Your portraits on your wedding day have endless options to them. The main tune we follow is getting you to interact with each other naturally. Although I’ll give you prompts and ideas and tell my bad jokes, what we do is up to you. Dance, hug, run, kiss, squeeze their hand extra tight. Be completely and totally you with as much or as little input from us as you like.
The rest of your day is totally unscripted. We will take the time to document the little details you’ve poured your heart into, hang out with your guests during cocktails for those candid moments, and you’ll notice us vanishing from time to time throughout it all. What we’re doing is taking a step back and finding those aspects that help tell your story. The buildings, the weather, the atmosphere, guest reactions, connections, and more. The story of your wedding day feels so much fuller to me that way.
We also get right in there for dance floor shenanigans.
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF WE’RE A GOOD MATCH?
This is a really important thing for you to consider. It may not seem like it at first, but really think about this for a moment. We’re there all day, and we’re your biggest source of memories of one of the most important chapters in your lives. So how do you know if I’m a good fit for you?
My style is what the industry calls matte and a little moody at times which also includes lots of rich colours and soft shadows. I tell super cheesy jokes, try to be punny, and hopefully make you laugh to break the ice. My style involves a lot of broad direction to get you to a point that feels real and natural and relaxed, along with conversation starters and silly games. My focus will always be on the real moments before I set aside time for dress photos and ring shots. I won’t be duplicating poses and styles you find online for your photos, because I’d rather you be you. And I won’t ask you to sacrifice your wedding day experience for photos.
If your goal is to enjoy your day to the fullest, if you don’t necessarily need 20 different photos of your cake, if you think cheesy jokes are the best, if you plan on smiling so much your cheeks will be sore, if you appreciate the fact that I’m fully prepared for the hangriest of people because I carry granola and fruit snacks everywhere, and if you like what you see on the blog then we could be a perfect match.
Disclaimer: I’ve been known to take 20 photos of a cake, I will absolutely get you a ring shot if you want one, and I’m probably more excited for your dinner than you are because wedding food is the best.
